Five reasons against Linux - therefore the change failed

We call the 5 most common reasons and prejudices, which is why the switch to Linux failed and users disappointed to return to Windows. And call counter-arguments.

Windows 10 has been available since summer 2015. With the new Windows version, which Microsoft released for a year as a free update, Microsoft wants to soothe and recover users who have been disappointed by Windows 8 / 8.1 and who have perhaps been cheering with a change from Windows to Linux. Nevertheless, few frustrated Windows users actually dared to switch, as the monthly evaluation of Netmarketshare shows. Apparently, many Windows users who want to switch to the free, free and comparatively secure Linux operating system have problems.

Together with our sister publication PC-World, we have compiled some reasons from readers' letters and community contributions, which is why Windows users who wanted to switch to Linux were frustrated and returned to Windows. Overall, there seem to be five main reasons that lead to the transition from Windows to Linux failing. We present these five reasons and evaluate their relevance.

1. The favorite program does not run under Linux

Usually they are professional programs from Adobe , especially Photoshop and Dreamweaver, To the transition from Windows to Linux partout do not want to do without. There is also no reference to GIMP - because GIMP, despite its strengths, is not a complete replacement for Adobe . In this respect, anyone who really needs all the features of Photoshop should either not switch entirely to Linux (and keep a partition with Windows, for example) or look at appropriate virtualization solutions like Wine , among which Photoshop is also to a certain extent on Linux computers Can be used.

Photoshop, Reader and Air in Linux - an overview

Photoshop and Dreamweaver, however, are specialized professional tools for enterprise use. Hardly any private user really needs all the features of Photoshop, the functionality of GIMP is quite sufficient for most users. And websites can also be created without Dreamweaver, especially in times when content management systems and blog software such as Wordpress form the basis for many professional websites .

Playing under Linux : In addition to these professional application programs, there is yet another software group that speaks against the use of Linux: Games namely. Because the game publishers still treat Linux as a second, if not a third tier. After all, the situation here is slowly improving through SteamOS and the game platform Steam of Valve.

Overall, however, Linux has become more attractive to players lately. There are now a number of ways to enjoy high-quality games on Linux machines. For example, there was the new World War One strategy game Hearts of Iron IV from the beginning also for Linux.

Here we show you in detail how you can also enjoy high-quality games under Linux: The best Linux games for Steam, Ubuntu, Holarse, Gog, Shell

Home users who use Linux and do not need Photoshop or do a lot of daddling can still be faced with the problem that they suddenly need Windows, for example when the child brings home a new learning software that only runs on Windows. This may help a virtual machine running Windows. Or there is the learning software also as apps for iOS and / or Android, because more and more publishers like USM bring out its well-known Windows learning software also now for the two most important mobile platforms. This is then an alternative for Linux users. A third solution would be cloud-based web applications as a replacement for such Windows software.

Our assessment: The vast majority of private users can easily switch to Linux immediately, except Hardcore-Daddler. Especially in combination with an iPad or Android tablet, the change to Linux nothing stands in the way.

2. The Hardware zickt

Basically, Linux has long had an excellent hardware detection. However, it sometimes happens that a certain graphics card or a UMTS stick denied the service after installing Linux. Workarounds that can be found in the various Linux forums such as ubuntuusers.

Sometimes, however, even the truly extensive Linux community does not help, for example, when it is relatively fancy hardware components, for which there are simply no Linux drivers. Or if a subcomponent at the delivery time was simply not yet mature. For example, the new Ubuntu Linux 8.04 sound system has caused headaches to many users since after the update to Ubuntu 8.04 the PCs and notebooks remained silent and could no longer play a sound. This is a long time ago, but such problems can not be completely ruled out in the autumn of 2016.

However, such hardware problems can be elegantly avoided by buying pre-configured PCs or notebooks with Linux. The offer is here however still thinly spread. A well-known provider of desktop computers and notebooks with preinstalled and specially adapted Linux is the German company Tuxedo.
